1997 Sangiovese

1997 Sangiovese

Surprise, surprise, surprise! Our first bottling of Sangiovese, only one barrel of this varietal was produced from Row 20 of our lower Mountain Top block, the sum total of Sangiovese vines currently planted at Pride. If you previously associated this variety with lighter-style red wines, buckle up! Inky red in color, the aromas suggest blueberry and port. Sweet and mouthfilling on the palate, chewy tannins last for about a half-hour in the finish. If it’s spaghetti, it better be red sauce! Then again, you might not need any food with this one, but don’t forget to brush! We have bottled this extremely limited offering in a striking 500 ml package.

The spectacular 1997 Sangiovese, available only in 500 ml bottles at the winery, is clearly the equal to some of the super Tuscan wines emerging from the 1997 vintage. Pride Mountain’s offering is unbelievably concentrated for a Sangiovese. A fabulous wine, its opaque purple color is followed by an extravagant nose of smoke, licorice, cassis, and toast. This intense, full-bodied, mouth-staining effort is gorgeously pure, with multiple layers to its personality, and a whoppingly long finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years.
